There are so many movie score composers that over the years have produced some of the best scores ever to go alongside the movies they feature in but there’s only really a handful that managed to create a catalogue of movie scores that will make up a huge music library on their own. On one hand, Star Trek The Motion Picture is bog standard science fiction: a big dumb object (BDO) appears on the horizon, the heroes must intercept it, their knowledge of the universe is both expanded and confounded by the vast impossibility of knowing the universe. It's full of stilted acting, stilted dialogue, and some stupendously heavy handed gestures towards universal themes. At the time, Star Trek: The Motion Picture was a financial success, but a critical failure, because of all that. The effects shots were brilliant, and so was the music.
